Valentine’s Day #4: Twilight

Twilight – White Chocolate Cupcake w/ Strawberry Filling vs. Black Forest Cupcake w/ Cherry Filling and Chocolate Pastry Cream

“When life offers you a dream so far beyond any of your expectations, it’s not reasonable to grieve when it comes to an end.”

Welcome to Forks, Washington… Home to huge redwood trees, sunless days and love-struck vampires and werewolves. Although I’ve yet to be “bitten” by the vampire bug, I don’t think it’s possible to talk about romantic movies on Valentine’s day without talking about the most famous love triangle since Marc Antony, Julius Caesar and Cleopatra, or perhaps Liz Taylor-Eddie Fisher-Richard Burton (Team Richard, anyone?). In these movies, Bella has to decide to whom she give her heart, and what world she will align herself with. On one hand, Jacob offers warmth, physical comfort and a small-town life, while Edward offers a more sophisticated, old-world relationship, but requires Bella to lose her life. I totally ‘get’ the draw of this saga, and the intense rivalry between the two heartthrobs. One of the girls out front was aghast that I had thought to make an ‘Edward’ cupcake without a ‘Jacob’ counterpart. So today is for all of you Twihards out there, whatever team you root for. Which cupcake will reign supreme? Let the best man (beast? undead?) win!

Valentine’s Day #3: Chocolat

Chocolat – Mayan Chocolate Cupcake w/ a Whipped Chocolate Cream Frosting

Vianne : And these are for your husband. Unrefined cacao nibs from Guatemala, to awaken the passions.
Yvette : Psshh. You’ve obviously never met my husband.
Vianne : Well, you’ve obviously never tried these.

I can’t imagine a world in which I wouldn’t like a movie about chocolate. I mean, really. Everything that Juliette Binoche (as Vienne) creates in this film makes me want to get my butt off the couch and into the kitchen to practice my chocolate tempering.  In this film, Vienne and her daughter are descended from Mayan traveling healers, dispensing chocolate remedies.  Traveling is in their blood, as Vienne and her daughter blow into a sleepy French town and open a Chocolaterie during the season of Lent. The most interesting part of this movie, besides her confections, is the rapport between Vienne and the townspeople, and her battle with the self-righteous Mayor. Inspired by the wonderful treats in this movie, I made a chocolate cake lighter than the ‘curious north wind’, with unprocessed cacao nib pieces “to awaken the passions,” and covered with a pillow of bittersweet dark chocolate. Try this one on your significant other and see if the Mayans were right!

Valentine’s Day #2: Bright Star

Bright Star – Lavender Fields Cupcake w/ a Lavender Vanilla Buttercream

“And still she slept an azure-lidded sleep,
In blanched linen, smooth and lavender’d”

I don’t know too many women who don’t love a good period film, and this is such a one.  Bright Star tells the story of now-famous poet John Keats and his tragic romance with Fanny Brawne, his neighbor in Hampstead Village. This movie has all the makings of a girls-night-in– beautiful costumes and scenery, Ben Wishaw is adorable as Keats, and the story is really achingly beautiful. I was inspired by the large lavender fields, and Fanny’s obsession with sewing. So grab a glass of wine, a lavender cupcake and make a night of it!

Valentine’s Day #1: Walk the Line

Walk the Line – Cocoa Cola Cupcake w/ a Southern Ermine Icing

Johnny: “You ever drink this water Warden?”
Warden: “Ah no. I’m a Coca-Cola man. ”

Who doesn’t love a story based on real life? Now I know there have been issues surrounding how Johnny Cash’s first wife was portrayed, but the best parts of this story are true. I love how they both fight for each other throughout the film. June fights for Johnny’s life and sobriety, and Johnny fights for June’s love, and they both come out as winners in the end. Not to mention that Joaquin Phoenix’s a total babe. Bonus points! I imagine this cupcake would be something June would have whipped up in her kitchen as a treat for John and the kids.
